In 1996 the Mercedes with the SLK, the current trend for Coupé-Cabriolets aanzwengeld, a little later, helped by the more affordable Peugeot 206 CC. But already in the early ’20 emerge the first ideas, and ten years later the first production models.

The idea is brilliant. With good weather all the benefits that a convertible offers, but without the disadvantage of a vulnerable and difficult introduction of canvas roof. Unfortunately, it has in practice led to many ghastly creations, with proportionally far too thick butts. Cars like the Micra CC, Colt CZC and Focus CC, our world now is not determined until a more beautiful place.

1919-1922 Hudson ‘Ellerbeck’

That substances roofs are actually not more of this time, was an idea dating from 1922. In that year, as far as we know, the very first convertible with klapdak built. Actually, klapdak not the right word, because with the system that Ben Ellerbeck conceived and built on a 1919 Hudson, the roof was in a whole mechanically on the stern laid. That the ‘trunk’ exactly the same shape and curvature as the roof, made this pretty easy. Below, a slightly later prototype from 1928.

In the early ’30 consider dentist Georges Paulin, the first hardtop that mechanically the car can disappear. Still, the roof consists of one part, but it fits exactly in the shapely derrières of the great Peugeots. The first model was the 401 Eclipse, not much later followed by the larger 601 and smaller 301. Paulin goes in 1934 for coachbuilder Pourtout and work there for the war also has a few other Peugeot models with an Eclipse roof.

1947 Playboy Motor Car Corporation

In 1953, would one H. Hefner the name Playboy famous the world over by that name a magazine with nude photos of Marilyn Monroe. Just after the war, in Buffalo, New York a small autofabriekje opened with the same name. There are small cars, with a 40-horsepower four-cylinder engine with a top speed of 121 km/h. Special was the metal roof, which consists of two parts, and is artfully could wegvouwen in the trunk. Manually though, but. There were only 97 copies were built before the factory in 1951, again went bankrupt.

1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner

Although not the first production car with a steel klapdak, was the Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner, also sold under the name Galaxie Skyliner, the first which in serious numbers was produced: 48.394 copies to be exact. The roof consisted of two parts and was using six electric motors fully automatic in the trunk hidden. A ridiculously complex system with resistors, mechanisms, relays and other for that time, high-level technology. It was also one of the top models of Ford between 1957 and 1959, and came standard with a thick V8 with 200 hp.

1983 Audi Quattro Treser Roadster

This came up recently over, so I will now not too much words to dirt. But Walter Treser was the first in a long time dared to coupe-cabriolets to be built.

1989 Toyota Soarer Aerocabin

The third and fourth generation of the Toyota Soarer is known in Europe as, respectively, the Lexus SC400, and SC430. That last came in 2001 on the market and was only available as a cabrio with steel klapddak (and the last available car with a standard cassette deck!). The second generation Toyota Soarer was there initially as a coupe, but came in 1989 when the to 500 copies limited Aerocabin. No real estate, but something what the French so nicely découvrable call: normal door and side jambs, but the middle and rear part of the roof can open. Just like the Fiat 500C and DS3 Cabrio. The Soarer Aerocabin is that to open the roof from two metal/glass parts that are electrically in the trunk may disappear.

1992 Honda CR-X del Sol Trans Top

Actually not a real Coupé-Cabriolet, but more a Coupe-Targa. As an option you could get on the third-generation CR-X, del Sol with the TransTop system. A needlessly complicated system that targadakje about the rops tilt, and in a kind of tray under the trunk slide. It is still necessary to put the roof manually and click on the mechanical that out of the trunk. Difficult to explain, so watch the video for the moment.

1995 Mitsubishi GTO VR4 Spyder

A year before the Mercedes with the SLK would come, did Mitsubishi the same trick with the GTO/3000GT. In America were the cars converted with the help of ASC Corporation, while the factory in Japan to another party verification for the conversion. Both versions, however, were simply using the Mitsubishi dealer available. Not in the Netherlands, incidentally, and only in very limited quantities. Hence you are probably not even aware.

In 1996 the Mercedes-Benz SLK on the market, and is the Coupé-Cabriolet mainstream. The name itself originates, indeed, from 1998, as Peugeot 20♡ CC presents, that two years later almost unchanged in production will go down as the 206 CC. No photos or videos, because do you know this, of course, all or would you prefer to never see again.
