Although this is not entirely unexpected, unfolds Volvo a clear vision for the future. After the switch on up to 4 cylinders in internal combustion engines, the Swedish company announced all future models as a PHEV.

S90

With the announcement of this ‘elektrificatiestrategie’ light Volvo will lift the veil on for the future models. So there are plug-inhybrideversies of the 60 – and 90-models, based on the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. A XC90 T8 and two V60 PHEVs are already there, but there will also be a S90 PHEV ‘other models’. To our knowledge it is the first time that Volvo openly about the S90 exhaust. We expect the successor of the S80 in January.

Volvo is also expanding the range of plug-inhybrideauto’s with the introduction of a new model year Twin Engine variant.

First fully electric car in 2019

In addition to phevs plant Volvo also pure EV’s, in 2019 we see the first model.

New series of compact models

Not only the SPA is extended, also, in 2017 a Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). On this smaller brother of the SPA, we go a zwik models in the ’40’s’series. This V40-brothers, both plug-inhybride as purely electric powertrains to accommodate, since Volvo Cars expects that models with electric drive on the medium term are good for about 10 percent of the total sales.

A video in which the CMA is presented you can find on autojunk.

Given the recent developments across the broad spectrum of manufacturers, we expect that around 2020 is indeed a bit more choice on EV than a Tesla or a Nissan Leaf. Audi, Porsche, and VW are working on EV’s, and Volvo wants a piece of the cake.
